Symmetry, Asymmetry and Balance

Artist Statement

This week in class I focused on trying to demonstrate the ideas of black-lighting, silhouettes and shadows through Symmetry, Asymmetry and Balance. The first few photos are what I tried to demonstrate but the rest are just freely taken with the exception of  black-lighting, silhouettes and shadows with in the pictures. This week unfortunately was quite cloudy which set me back since the main element of the photo that I needed was the sun which was not super prominent. I worked with what I could and tried to express these different techniques through each picture.

Pictorial Lines

Artist Statement
This week in photography we focused on three new concepts, decorative lines, arrangement of lines and leading lines. Last year in photography I focused on the same concepts, the difference between last year and this year was a goal for myself to see if I fully understood the concepts and trying to perfect them. Of course I could always do better but I think this weeks work was fun and a good way for me to see how I improved.

Decorative Lines
Decorative lines are lines in a picture that don't make the entire photo up. If you were to take away the lines, you would still have the background. In other words, the lines in the photo are there for decorative purposes.

Arrangement of Lines
An arrangement of lines is where the lines in the photo do take up the whole picture. If you were to take away all the lines you wouldn't have any of the photo life.

Leading Lines
Leading lines is where the main image of the picture is a line that is leading to a subject. I though this was the most self explanatory concept.

Still Life

Still Life

Artist Statement: This week I worked on taking photos of still life. I used Edward Weston as my inspiration for this weeks work. I set up a small station inside where I took each photo. I placed the food item on a small white bowl and used the zoom setting on the camera to focus close up on the image. My intention of these photos was to work on the lighting and to see what would happen if I changed the angle of the light. Each photo is pretty similar except that I tried to create a different light structure in each one. Then I edited each photo in black and white so that I could capture the lighting nicely as well as having each photo be cohesive with one another. I think think weeks photos where challenging but I would like to work on becoming better at taking still life photos in future classes.
